Welcome to Shaughnessy

Shaughnessy is a residential neighbourhood that was developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) during the 1900’s. Named after CPR’s president, Sir Thomas Shaughnessy, this neighbourhood was planned and developed specifically for Vancouver’s elite. This can be seen in the large, grand homes that populate the neighbourhood, which were originally designed to be reminiscent of homes built in Renaissance England and colonial America.

Notably, in 1981 the City of Vancouver passed a bylaw creating the First Shaughnessy Official Development Plan. This ensures that Shaughnessy’s special character remains intact, and helps preserve the area’s pre-1940 estate image and single-family character.

The Shaughnessy neighbourhood is bordered by 16th Avenue to the north, 41st Avenue to the south, Oak Street to the east, and Arbutus/West Boulevard to the west.

Shaughnessy is an almost entirely residential area, and is perfect for families looking for a safe and serene environment.  Known for its elegant tree-lined streets, Shaughnessy is great for strolling, jogging, or biking. During their morning stroll, residents can admire the numerous heritage properties, including the Hycroft and Glen Brae.

Shopping is convenient, with many local shops, restaurants, and service amenities along the borders of Shaughnessy. Popular locations include the Arbutus Village Shopping Centre and the Oakridge Shopping Centre.

By far, one of the most popular attractions in Shaughnessy is the VanDusen Botanical Garden. The garden covers 55 acres, and displays plants gathered from all over the world. It is open to the public every day (except Christmas), and hosts special events throughout the year – including galas, art shows, painting classes, and the annual Festival of Light.
