NEIGHBORHOOD PROFILE: POINT GREY
Welcome to Point Grey
Bordered by English Bay to the north, this exclusive neighborhood offers some of the best ocean and mountain views in the City. According to First Nations legend, Point Grey was originally the “Battleground of the West Wind” as it divided the territory of the Musqueam from those of the Squamish. Today, Point Grey is a residential, family-friendly neighborhood surrounded by spectacular parks and beaches. Notably, the neighborhood is nearby the University of British Columbia (UBC), and attracts many faculty members and working professionals. In general, Point Grey is a great neighborhood for the family, education, and/or business-oriented individual.
Due to a zoning bylaw passed in Point Grey in 1922, the majority of housing in Point Grey are single-family detached homes with prices in the upper range. However, zoning bylaws have changed, and there has been a push to provide more affordable housing. In the coming years, residents can expect denser strata properties and an increased number of commercial units.
Point Grey is bordered by 16th Avenue to the south, Alma Street to the east, English Bay to the north, and Blanca Street to the west.
Point Grey is a haven for nature-lovers, with its many parks and beaches. Only steps away from beautiful Jericho Beach and Spanish Banks, residents can stroll, bike, and even sail along the waterfront. The Pacific Spirit Regional Park also offers over 55 km of trails for the avid hiker.
There are also many options for shopping, with a collection of local shops, cafes, and restaurants at the intersection of 10th and Alma. Also, on route to UBC, farther up 10th Avenue, there is a more utilitarian mix of retail options, including grocery stores, banks, and pharmacies.
For additional fun, check out the West Point Grey Community Centre. Made up of six buildings, there is always something to do – whether it’s swimming, tennis, arts and crafts, foosball, or pool. There is also the Jericho Arts Centre (JAC), operated by the West Point Grey Community Associate in partnership with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and United Players.
